Tayside Health Arts Trust (THAT) and Ward 19

Ward 19 Benvie house provides continuing care to 18 men with dementia and challenging behaviours. This case study describes a joint project between Tayside Health Arts Trust (THAT) and nursing and OT staff in ward 19 which introduced art activities to the residents, and the continuation of this project within the ward.

The project delivered a 16-week programme through engagement of an artist and volunteer artist working closely with the occupational therapy and nursing staff.

The programme aimed and succeeded in creating, an "open studio" within the ward, where a variety of art activities would take place on a weekly basis. A meeting room was cleared to allow the space to be used as a gallery, to show work in progress, or a working space as required. The studio door was left open to allow the participants to come and go as they pleased; It was felt important to keep the participants within their ward environment as opposed to taking them to another area used by the OT staff. Previous habits of gathering at the bottom of the corridor and wandering was hoped to be diverted through the use of the Art Room.

The programme achieved ongoing commitment and due to the enthusiasm of the OT staff, activity workers and involvement of the nursing staff, the art room remains open and in regular use by residents and staff some 2 years after the funded project finished.
